Only 4 to 18% of images in medical textbooks depict how certain diseases manifest in darker skin tones, posing a significant risk as misdiagnoses become more prevalent.
In response to this issue, we created Google Mukwende, an app that addresses racism in the field of medicine by utilizing AI to improve racial diversity in dermatology textbooks.
This initiative stems from the collaboration between Google and Malone Mukwende, a medical student from the United Kingdom who, aware of this problem, decided to publish a dermatology book specifically for darker skin.

The app uses the smartphone camera to capture a reference image of a skin disease. Through AI, it identifies the disease and showcases how the same symptom manifests on darker skin tones.
To raise awareness about this reality and promote the app, we crafted a social media strategy featuring data-driven educational posts.
Additionally, we crafted display ads on pages where users typically search for disease symptoms. The banner showcases how the same disease the user is looking for appears in different skin tones.
Finally, we crafted a sponsored article for medical journals to introduce the app to healthcare professionals. They could contribute to the app by sending images of their patients' symptoms, enhancing the database.
